Concept
Sperry Topsider boat shoes don’t exactly scream ‘fun’. I was enlisted in designing a women’s and kids canvas boat shoe that had a little more personality. The strategy was to design a colorful distressed canvas boat shoe that pulled in some nautical & preppy influenced details.
Design
To start, I chose to replace the standard overlasted boat shoe sole with a vulcanized rubber sole with traditional cut siped rubber tread. Instead of leather strip lacing, I specified round laces similar to maritime rope. For the sock liner I designed a custom repp tie print. The initial design had selectively placed frayed canvas edges, but for the production models we achieved a better result by leaving the entire edge raw.
